Birdman
Josh Bowes

In an increasingly complex world, Josh Bowes painted works investigate the ambiguous
& two-fold relationship of man on nature. His artistic investigations ultimately involve a questioning of our everyday lives. Josh’s paintings intentionally collide the adaptative survival mechanism of birds within human occupation. Such observation is informed by
his own personal experience of nature and observations of human & natural habitat. The bird has become a streetwise opportunist. These anthropomorphized characters have a dualistic appearance, occasioned by their natural form and the uniformed confinement of
a business suit. The recurring imagery is tensioned by sharp angles and disintergation upon the suit fabric indicating an internal struggle with both a personal and collective response. Bowes has constructed the visual style apparent in this exhibition through an extensive drawing practice since youth. This body of work is inspired by reading Henry Thoreau’s Walden.
